Abstract

The human brain goes through a long period of development. Although the brain changes from gestation and during childhood, there are important changes during adolescence, a stage in which brains are more capable of change than adults, and, unlike children, adolescents have a greater capacity to shape brain development. Increased information processing skills and social sensitivity during adolescence also make this a time of increased ability to interact with the social world, which is very complex. The article describes these brain changes and how educational settings can foster brain development and optimize learning environments during adolescence.
